Black Girls Rock, Indeed!
Beverly Bond, T-shirt designer and DJ, had a vision. After having her fill of watching women of color being objectified as automobile ornaments and human blow-up dolls in Hip-Hop videos, she wanted to show the young ladies who were watching the same videos that they were more than disposable props. Bond founded Black Girls Rock, a charity and mentoring program for girls of color. The mission of Black Girls Rock is to empower and inoculate these girls of color against the misogynist imagery in the music industry, particularly in Hip Hop. Black Girls Rock also provides a mentoring program, in conjuction with Scratch DJ Academy that teaches young ladies how become DJs. Rock On, Sistahs shines a light on Sistah Bond who, through Black Girls Rock, is fighting sexism by creating an army of female artists who will make a significant contribution to music using talent instead of their bodies.
