Short Requiem For A Beloved Classic Rock Radio Station
Friday, April 3, 2009 was the last day for DJ Cerphe (pronounced Surf) and his Washington D.C. classic rock station, WTGB (94.7 FM, "The Globe"). His station was the lone torchbearer of the classic rock genre. It was the only place where I could still "get the Led out" or enjoy a "Two-for-Tuesday" medley of The Clash. Alas, Cerphe's departure signals the end of an era in popular radio and the beginning of a much blander one. On Monday morning, 94.7 FM becomes another Top 40 station. Instead of hearing an Elvis Costello song, listeners will hear a song by the Jonas Brothers that was inspired by an Elvis Costello song.
