....because she demonstrates it with each song that she writes herself, performs herself, sings herself and puts out on her record label, Righteous Babe. (Righteous Babe is also the home to other kick-ass talent, including Utah Phillips, Arto Lindsay, Andrew Bird and Toshi Reagon to name a few.) I witnessed her kick-ass powers at a Jones Beach concert in 1999. With Maceo Parker on saxophone, Ani strumed and boogied late into the summer night. I was new to the "Ani" experience but afterwards I became a convert. Rocker, mother, activist, poet, artist, ass kicker. Ani is all of these things. I hope more female musicians follow her example.
